RV Travel With Children

Children add a wrinkle to any RV travel plan. They have all kinds of needs and considerations that have to be addressed to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. At the same time, you shouldn’t hesitate to bring them along as traveling in an RV can be a truly eye-opening experience for young children, allowing them to meet new people and try new things. Camp Rite RV has put together this information to help make bringing children along on your RV trip as easy and enjoyable as possible.

Provide Entertainment Options

Keeping children entertained on long trips is a decades-long problem. When you are packing, make sure that you leave some room for some of your children’s favorite toys, books, and movies so that they have something to do. For a more modern solution, consider downloading a free coloring app, game, and/or educational video onto a device. Encourage creativity by giving them markers and asking them to document their favorite parts of the trip. Classic craft projects like friendship bracelets are also encouraged.

Secure Sleeping Arrangements

Sleeping in an unfamiliar place can be difficult for some children. You may wish to organize a pre-trip sleepover to acclimate them to sleeping in your RV. Beyond that, simply make sure that your children’s sleeping quarters are comfortable, with plenty of room, a stable temperature, and a soft bed or sleeping pad.

Establish A Routine

While traveling can make it difficult to know when you will be eating, sleeping, and so on,  establishing a routine can be beneficial for keeping children calm on an RV trip. Make an effort to do these things at around the same time, and make sure that your child knows the itinerary for each day.

Choose Kid-Friendly Destinations

A great way to keep children engaged on a trip is to involve them in the decision-making process. Kids love museums, parks, playgrounds, and zoos, and being allowed to choose where they go inspires confidence in them. You can make shopping trips more fun by giving your child a bit of money to spend. Know your child’s limit, and schedule time for rest or bathroom breaks. If your child sees something they just have to check out, don’t be afraid to deviate from the schedule on occasion.

Encourage Learning

Traveling is a great chance to learn at any age. While you travel, you can show your child some maps to teach a bit of geography and cut down on the “Are we there yet?” questions. Use the internet to look up some of the history of the places you see, and encourage your child to do their own research. You can also take advantage of things like the National Parks’ Junior Ranger program for further learning.
